Root canal treatment in Littleborough

Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation. With modern techniques and good anaesthetic it feels much like having a filling, and it lets you keep your own tooth.

About root canal treatment

Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. If decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp can become inflamed or infected, causing throbbing pain, sensitivity or an abscess.

Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the tiny canals inside the root, and seals them. Our aim is always to protect and maintain your natural teeth, and a root filling is often the best way to do exactly that.

Signs you might need a root filling

  • Lingering pain

Toothache that throbs, wakes you up, or hangs around after hot or cold drinks.

  • Pain on biting

A tooth that is tender when you chew or press on it.

  • Swelling or a gum boil

A pimple on the gum, swelling or a bad taste can mean an abscess.

  • A darkening tooth

A tooth that has turned grey or dark, often after an old knock.

What happens

Three calm steps

  1. Step 1: Numb and protect

We make sure the tooth is completely numb and isolate it to keep it clean.

  2. Step 2: Clean the canals

We remove the infected pulp, then clean and shape the canals inside the root.

  3. Step 3: Seal and restore

We seal the canals and restore the tooth, often with a crown for long-term strength.

Good to know

Root Canal Treatment: your questions answered

Does root canal treatment hurt?

The treatment itself should feel much like a filling, because the tooth is fully numb. It is the infection that causes the pain, and root canal treatment is what takes it away. The tooth may feel tender for a few days afterwards.

How much does a root filling cost?

Root fillings cost £375 for a tooth with one canal, £475 for two canals and £595 for a molar.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are more likely to crack, so we often recommend a crown to protect them. Your dentist will explain whether your tooth needs one.

Is it better just to take the tooth out?

Keeping your own tooth is usually best for your bite, your other teeth and your jawbone. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or implant also costs more. We will talk through both options honestly.
